I am barely starting to learn about Studio equipment and portrait photograpghy. I am planning on buying 3 softboxes ( continuous lighting) and I wanna if I can just use one key light and the other two as backdrop lighting? And the softboxes only have one bulb in it. Ideas?
Not sure what you are asking. yes you can use them as you want. how powerful are those lights?
I would go for strobes….more light but they need more knowledge and practice to control the results
I was wondering if I can use an E-TTL flash on a wireless trigger. the flash is a sunpack digiflash 3000.
Rj
for you to use the ETTL function on a remotely controlled flash, you need to have the appropriate wireless trigger able to send back information from the flash to the camera.
you can use the ETTL function on the flash, but what is the point if the camera does not have the information back to understand the fact a flash will be used and adjust the settings accordingly
Question is why would you want to do that?
Hi Christain,
Hope this mail from London UK finds you. Family and business all well.
Just watched your brilliant and informative tips on posing the bride and tips on her wedding day ( extremely useful and helpful)
I am a keen amateur using my used Nikon D3 & recent Nikon D 600
And shoot weddings and portraits for family & friends
Question
When shooting people with dark skin like African Caribbean people do you set your camera on neutral. Portrait or standard settings?
Sometimes at a wedding where the couple may be of mix blessings color ski and pale skin?its hard to get the exposure correct!
Any tips sir
Regards
Will from London
William
I have only one setting. Landscape settings. I found that the colours are nicer, but that is just my opinion
Would try to use spot metering and expose for the skin and see what you get. Also for this situation you have to do post production and use few templates to bring various parts of the image closer to each other in terms of exposure levels
Christian
First, thanks for some great videos and for being a good inspiration. It is a pleasure to see the enthusiasm you have, it’s probably the biggest inspiration.
My comment is about flash. I fought hard with flash. One of the things I had problems with was fill flash. In particular, I failed to understand one thing that my flash did not have unlimeted power. I was not thinking about that when I photograph a person against the sun. The distance between my subject and the flash was too big, I have a ex 430ii. I know you talk about this before, but I thing that it would / could help others with an sample of this. Again thanks for helping us ametures.
Am Jemele from Jamaica i’m a freelance graphic designer and i wanna go into photography, i like you tutorials on youtube and you inspire me alot, i have not yet bought a dslr but i am weighing my mind on the Nikon D3200 but i need to know a lens that can use to begin with that i can use as all purpose until i can afford a good one, plz reply asap thanks.
Jemele
thank your for your enquiry
a 24-70 will be the best choice if affordable. it has a good range to cover most of the cases.
there is no such lens that covers everything and there is always a compromise.
what budget do you have?
US$200
Jemele
performance comes with sacrifices. you need to invest a bot more than that.
my lenses are thousands of dollars…..
Thank you for your great videos! I would like to know the specific lights(make and model) and soft box size you used in your video Published on Sep 12, 2013.
I want to have a home studio and out of all the videos I’ve seen, your what I was looking for.
Sincerely,
Joe D.
Christian,
It is a great idea having community earning badges for the content they create. It has been almost a year since you announced this membership opportunity. I was wondering a little- how goes it? Has anyone ever become gold or platinum member?
I am running a small software service for photographers and thought that maybe a free 1 year membership on my service could be a nice bonus for your members who reach platinum (or maybe gold) levels.
Drop me a note if you would be interested to talk this through.
Keep up your great work on this website!

P.S. sorry for posting here in the comments, but the contact form does not work for me… Just throws an error message “Sorry, email message could not be delivered.”

Hi Christian,
I started photography for only a couple of months now. I have learnt a lot from your youtube channel which taught me all about the basics and equipment knowledge. I have taken some good pictures which i like, i would like you to evaluate them and guide me further. but being an absolute beginner i am very scared to present the pictures on this platform. please allow me to show my pictures to you.
Thanking you,
Amrit
