Light metering systems – how camera measures exposure

Light metering systems

how camera measures exposure

The light metering systems are integrated in each camera. Most of the modern DSLR cameras will have an automatic focus system. Just as a simple explanation, when we use our cameras, the shutter button can be pressed halfway in order the camera to find a focus point and measuring the light level at that point. In this moment camera will now how far away and how much light there is on the subject. The camera will assess the zoom, will prepare the lens to focus on the certain distance to the subject and will prepare for a certain  exposure to reflect the correct light level. The camera can get it wrong but this will be a subject of a different short photography lesson.
