The bridal party line up
wedding photography posing guide
One pose I always like to take at almost every wedding I do is the line up bridal party pose. Basically what you need to do is to line up either the boys or the girls, every 2 meters and shot along the row focusing on the bride or the groom. the best lens to be used is a telephoto in order to reach a nice depth of field effect. Also a good idea to have a even rhythm and also use the rule of thirds for the subject which is either the bride or the groom. I always like this spose as there are not many ways to get this wrong and always get a sign of the couple being happy with it when I show it on the LCD screen during the shoot.
As a variation for this depth of field rhythmic effect, is to take a photo of the bride in the forefront and have the rest of the bridal party in tghe background blurry again. Also rule of thirds will ensure your composition will look, properly framed and also a very good shot.

Good morning, Christian,
I have a question regarding depth of field. What I understand is that there are two ways to get a narrow depth of field, but not sure if I am right or not
1.) If using 18-55mm canon lens, turn the lens to the end 55 mm, then will get a narrow depth of field.
2.) need use a telephoto lens.
Now I want to shot a portrait using a 55-250 mm canon lens. Should I turn the lens to the end 250 mm and stay far to the person to take a shot? Thanks.

teh narrow depth of field is given by the lens and the aperture. your lenses will not give you what I believe you want.
Did you see this?

Christian,
Thank you for quick reply. Here are the lenses I have Canon EF 50mm f/.8 II, EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II & EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II. My goal is to get a narrow depth of field for portrait shot. Should I use telephoto lens EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II and turn to the max aperture and zoom to the end of the lens to achieve my goal?
If my lenses can not help me to achieve my goal, could you please recommend a lens for me? Thanks.
Wei
the canon f.8 should give you a nice depth of field at f.8. just try aperture priority and set f8 and see what happens.
also set your EF 55-250 and go for the 250mm focal length. shoot from a couple of meters and see what happens again
The most narrow depth of field I know is a Macro lens F2.8, or any fixed lens with large apertures such as F1.2, 1.4, 1.8
and by the way, if you want to do the line up as per above, your lens at 250 mm should do the job
I am about to shoot my first wedding. My main photography experience is shooting sports. My lens availability are 70-200 telephoto, 55-250 macro, 28-135 macro, and 18-55 macro.
You stated on your video that you use a varety of lenses. Is there a different lens I should rent/borrow?
The wedding is set to be outside, since this is Kansas we might need to take it inside if mother nature interfers.
Thank you,
Jessica
