Portrait, Trees and Vase
Piyush photos for comments
Hello Christian,
As an hobbyist, still using point and shoot camera, Sony HX1, in process to get my first DSLR (Still looking), I want you to review my work and let me know about my technique and if I am going in right direction. I do post process my pictures in Photoshop Element 8, Always try not to crop much, and maintain picture ratio, and never over process colors. Trying my best. Here I am submitting 3 pictures from different category 1) Portrait 2) Nature 3) Abstract. All your comments will help me to improve.
Here is my BLOG address on Flickr
Waiting to see your review on my pictures.
Thank you

thank you for your submission. Let’s get straight into the photo critique
Krish’s portrait
Content 3 out of 10
I would assume this is your daughter portrait? I have assigned 3 out of 10 as for a portrait this is nothing special. You can give yourself a 9-10 as it relates to you. I would have wanted to see some sort of intent, portrait approach, a little story or something a bit more abstract than just a pic inside a car.
Composition 6 out of 10
Despite the average look of the image, I do not mind the composition. I am just concerned it is not your intent, but a happy accident? is it? please let me know that your nice subtle crop was intended? Maybe the eye line following the rule of thirds?
Image quality 4 out of 10
Image quality is not bad, just raw, and I find that fact the light comes from under instead of above a little bit disturbing. It does not help at all.
Overall TRS mark 4.3
Trees
Content 2 out of 10
I have got difficulties identifying the subject…if the subject are the underexposed trees, than I do not believe this is a blunt statement…can you tell us what is the story here? I would like to know your intent
Composition 3 out of 10
Cannot see any composition here – there is chaos
Image quality 3 out of 10
Same as above…I cannot see anything
TRS mark 2.66
Vase
Content 7 out of 10
This image is by far the best out of 3. I like this clean and simple approach. no issues seeing what you want to tell me. Love the colours, not too strong, just right,
Composition 7 out of 10
I see immediately the rule of thirds and I believe this would have been even better on a landscape format to make it even more obvious. I like the position of the vase at the end of the shelf and the subtle shadow.
Image quality 7 out of 10
Probably you took this image with the same camera as the other, but as you can see all elements lift the other and That is why your mark is better here
TRS mark – 7 out of 10 – this is good photography

I have seen your flickr account and i could some some great photographs there next to some average ones…. I believe your choice here of samples is not the best. You definitely have a good eye, and are a great photographer/artist. You see the world through your own personality and I appreciate that. I hope this rating system is giving you food for thought, and definitely I would encourage you to get some better gear to take your art to the next level. Also you should not listen to others,
………………………………………………………
Hi,
Thank you very much, for +Critique/Suggestions and time. This will help me figure out lot of stuff. As per gear I ordered Canon T5i and waiting for delivery with 18-135 STM Lens + 70-250 STM Lens, and I guess that will improve quality of pictures.
and on pictures rating ….
1st picture ..u guess right… he is my son. he was playing in car, and light was not that bad so i took some pictures, I cropped it because background was not that good/distracting , eyes at ROT, and i like that little smile he had on his face, looking straight into camera. and kids photography is hardest at his age 1 year.
2nd picture… Early morning, going for work, I saw sun rays and fog coming through trees, I likes it so I took this shot.
3rd picture…At night time, With sailing light falling on this vase, I like it took few shot and than post process in Photoshop element 8.
Thank you,
Regards

hi,
Forget to ans one of your Q in picture 1! Yes, that was intended crop, If i crop any picture i do take time to compose while cropping. Eyes are little bit off by ROT, left eye on that 1/3 ROT line.
And I do take more time composing, I waited and moved till his eyes were straight on camera, he was constantly moving, tried different approach to grab his attention on camera.
Thanks

Hi Piyush
, thanks for submitting your work today, we endvour to give you the best feedback and advise with regards your Photographs.
Content 3 out of 10
The content of your image is clearly a portrait However it does seem like a straight forward snap shot from what looks like inside a vehicle, I can see what you wanted to capture however maybe a little more thought in composing and setting a different angle would suit better here.
Composition 5 out of 10
Composition is the effect of having your image in a appealing position which is pleasing to the eye as well as being photographically correct, again I can see your intent on what you wanted to capture here a nice portrait, however a little more thought would need to go into this image to make it stand out in a crowd.
Image quality 4 out of 10
The quality is average in my opinion there is room for improvement, lighting is not the greatest , coming from an enclosed environment where by it does look like a bright day outside, maybe the same shot taken from the outside would have come out much better again room for thought when setting up the shot.
Overall TRS mark 4.3
Trees
Content 2 out of 10
Content here is lacking here I can see your intent on capturing the light through the trees, however there is not much to draw us into the picture, maybe people in the same shot may help us identify this image as having some meaning.
Composition 3 out of 10
Composition is about searching for the best angles possible, taking your time and looking for the best outcome, for your image you want people to wow your images, your methods seems to be snap a shot as soon as you see it without looking around for the best angles i feel
Image quality 3 out of 10
Image quality is not as great here the image does look very fuzzy and out of focus, again it seems that this was a quick snap shot without any thought for what you wanted to capture, Photography way to earn a living or a great way to relax, but it does involve patients and time to discover angles and the right moments to shot.
TRS mark 2.66
Vase
Content 6 out of 10
Now this is a better image is shows us what exactly is going on here a simple but effective image.
Composition 7 out of 10
The rule of thirds is seem here which is a great start, lots of people do forget about the rule of thirds I know I’m one of them at times. This image is in portrait mode even though landscape may have been more effective showing some negative space to the right etc.
Image quality 7 out of 10
Good all round quality a clear image of what is taken and how we see this image as clearly defining what it is, nice job.
TRS mark – 7 out of 10 – this is good photography

Thanks for submitting your work I know that our comments may not may been what you hoped for or that they have given you a better insight into the some techniques and thought processes that can be used before and after taking your images, However Photography is an ongoing process and takes us all a long time to master, we have all started from the beginning and work are way to where we feel comfortable, Keep taking pictures and keeping experimenting with angles and techniques.
TITLE: Krish’s Portrait
CONTENT: 3/10
The content is average. You should give yourself a higher score if this is your child.
COMPOSITION: 4/10
I think the composition is on average. It appears to me the composition is what everyone else would do when taking a close up portrait. Don’t be afraid to really zoom in and chop some stuff off. I would like to see the portrait be able to breathe a bit more also. It’s not a bad composition, but you can do better next time around.
IMAGE QUALITY: 5/10
Image quality is average. I would like to see those eyes in better focus and sharper.
TRS SCORE: 4
Summary:
Piyush,
I believe you will do better as you gain experience and learn some tips along the way. Study other photographers work and see what makes them stand out. There is a ton of information here about photography and if you go through from start to finish you will get better.

Hi,
Thanks Christian, Simon and Kevin, I highly appreciate your thoughts on my pictures, that helped me to analyse my work and that will help me to improve.
Thank you
Piyush
You are welcome Piyush. I didn’t have time to critique the last two photographs yet, but I can if you wish. They will be very similar to Christian’s and Simon’s view. I’m glad you didn’t take any of the comments as being harsh. We are here to provide honest feedback that will hopefully help you improve your skills 🙂 Just keep shooting, experimenting and learning and you shall improve. Looking forward to seeing more work in the future.

This is a snapshot. Although the child is so cute, photographically this is a below-average portrait.
Composition: TRS mark 4/10
Compositionally speaking, there is a lot of room for improvement. I suggest you read around portraiture and practice some established techniques e.g. setting the subject to one side, rule of thirds, light control, etc. You may afterwards be creative and ‘break’ the rules! Filling the frame as you did is a good concept.
Image quality: TRS mark 3/10
This looks like a crop of an image taken in a motor vehicle. Choosing various backgrounds and having them blurred would have helped reducing such distractions.
You may also learn how to use, modify and control light, whether available, artificial or a combination of both. Lessons by Mr Tudor Christian on this website can point you in the right direction.

Content: TRS mark 4/10
A main subject is missing. Other than underexposed trees, the viewer cannot really identify what this image is really about.
Composition: TRS mark 3/10
With regards to composition, this image lacks interest. It does not tell a story. The viewer is left looking around the frame for a point of interest, one that I cannot find.
Image quality: TRS mark 3/10
The trees are underexposed and the sky is blown out with almost no detail. The wide aperture did not help produce an image that is in focus and this impacts the scene rather negatively. Colours are rather dull but this may be due to conversion.
Interpret my critique as a path to take better photos. Do not be disheartened by the low marks but treat them as a learning experience. It is though such dialogue that we all learn.
I have looked at you Flickr photo stream and witnessed some very beautiful and creative images, amongst which I consider, ‘Sun Shine’ as excellent. Light & Pattern is unusually imaginative. Nice work.

Content: TRS mark 8/10
This image is beautiful. The minimalist approach to this vase arrangement really works out.
Composition: TRS mark 7/10
You nailed this one. I really like the way you placed the vase on to one side observing the ‘rule of thirds’. Negative space is used well too. This creates interest. I like the overall softness and colours. The shadows on the wall also add a nice touch to the image overall.
One suggestion if I may, try work out this image – shoot in landscape mode and play with various lighting setups.
Image quality: TRS mark 7/10
This is a good image but one which may be improved with better equipment and camera handling – use of tripods, off camera flash etc. Moving from your ‘bridge camera’ to a dslr will gradually give you increased control and flexibility also due to a wider choice of lenses and other accessories. This undoubtedly would positively impact image quality.
Well done. This image should be printed and framed.
