live music photography

hi Christian
I would like to tell you about my passion, live music. I live about 25 miles from London England so I have seen some of the greatest bands in the world, from The Stones to McCartney. I recently saw Fleetwood Mac and they were brill, but I must admit I love going to the smaller venues around the south east England area and seeing so called smaller acts. One guy I always go and see when hes in the country is a wonderful American Blues guitarist called Walter Trout, now in his sixties but still a great act, I wonder if any of the academy of photography subscribers have seen, or heard of him. I always go equipped with my canon 40d camera with a sigma 70-200 2.8 OS lens attatched which is great in low light, but must admit a lot of venues are now clamping down on so called professional cameras, so not being a so called pro, its getting harder to get my camera in without it being confiscated until after the show. Up till now I have had pretty good success as you can see if go to my website, www.alancollinsphotography.com All the photos you see were shot by me standing in the crowd trying to get the best possible position
I started with a canon rebel fitted with a sigma 70-300 5.6 lens, but soon realised that it was too slow in low light so had to upgrade.
The 2 photos that I am sending to you, have a look at them first and guess who they are, you have 5-4-3-2-1 seconds, they are from my era (im 57) have you got them yet, Ok its Prince, possibly along with The Rolling Stones, the best act ive ever seen, and the other act? The Eagles who started their set with Hotel California, it doesnt get much better than that.

I have gone to a lot of festivals which is really good value for money as you can see 6-8 acts in a day. The price of tickets now for major acts is getting crazy, it cost £180 to see the Stones, who can afford that?
I recently bought the canon 5d mark 2 and took it to my last concert, Walter Trout, incidentally £15 to get in, and managed to get right down the front, so I used my Sigma 50mm 1.4 lens and got some great shots as you can see on my website. Unfortunately Walter has not been well lately and has lost a lot of weight.
I always use spot metering, as I find that all the lights can confuse the camera, do you agree with that, or can you advice on any other camera settings.
Please let me know what you think of my pictures, and no I don’t know what the copyright status is. Thank you for your great website. Alan Collins

Alan

thank you for your nice message and great photos. I enjoyed your letter and I can say that for concert photos these are close to as good as it gets in terms of photography without much editing. I can recognise the passion for photography and music in your and rest assured I guessed the artists adn I grew up with them. I believe you own these pictures as they are public performances and I do not believe there is any low forbidding you to take picture, however you need to check the rules in your country.

Just to keep things to a close to the idea of Academy of Photography here are some TRS ratings for both of them

Content: 8/10
I can say I give them and 8 as I find them interesting as I relate to the artists. I say that as if I would see your photos in a rush I will stop one second…and that makes them valuable to me and I believe to you as well. I woudl say for someone younger the content might be different in value, but that is Ok as people are different.
Composition: 5/10
First image is an accident, no composition, the second one is better and I like the fact the second shows just half of Prince and for that maybe a 7/10 will be closer.
Image Quality: 7/10
not much to discuss here, well exposed, perhaps I could give the second image an 8 as it is much more interesting
TRS Score:  6.6 -7.6/10
I believe they are good photos overall, and the second one close to great!
I hope it helps
Best of luck
Christian
