Long exposure special effects

rotate your christmas lights over your head

As the title already suggests, this is an easy way to play with your camera in manual mode during night time, for a fun result. Before you put your christmas lights away, you can do few tricks and get some nice special long exposure effects. this example below it is just a play for 10 minutes with the camera on a tripod, in manual mode, aperture F2.8, shutter speed 10 seconds, and ISO 100. If you are doing this please be safe conscious and do not play in the wet and it will be a good idea to wear gloves. You still have some electricity in your hand. the obvious advice is to do it in dry weather.
You can use any light settings you want and you will never the get the same result. you can play with the ISO, just to get a bit more light and you can start to see the environment a little bit, or use shorter shutter speed such as 2 seconds 3, 4 or 5 to have shorter light trails. As anything, just have fun with it and play with the settings as much as possible. Vary each camera settings one at the time to start understanding what they do and just go with it.
this is one of the many ways to get long exposure special effects and you do not need a fancy camera for it. Any camera with manual mode control will do the same job.
if you come up with something cool, just send us a copy and we will publish it below for a comparison
