Time lapse is the technique in photography or video to speed up time. It is suitable for slow movement scenes, such as clouds, growing plants or a hysterical race between several snails. The idea is very simple. One need to capture a series of still images of a slow moving subject and use these images as frames of a vide, footage or film to speed up the action.

In this video Christian explains the basic elements required to do a time lapse photography video.:

There are 3 basic elements for a good time lapse:

1. a good tripod. You need to allow your camera to take pictures for a large amount of time in one undisturbed location and that is why a sturdy tripod is essential.

2. a camera of any type, even a compact one will do the job. The camera settings can vary depending of the desired exposure and the light level. It is one thing to do a day time lapse or a night one, as one obviously can appreciate. I believe one of the best choices is to set up the camera in aperture priority mode to lock in the depth of field and and allow the camera to choose the shutter speed and ISO. This is not rocket science and you can use other settings as well to get your exposure right. It is important to set up the results as the lowest resolution, as more than 1920/1080 pixels will not help anyway.

3. and Intervalometer, if your camera does not have one already as part of standard settings. This intervalometer will help camera trigger once in intervals set up by you in order to get the desired effect. Depending how slow your action goes, you can go once every 5 seconds, 30 seconds, 300 seconds, 3000 seconds….it is up to you. I have seem time lapse showing the movement of a glacier over one season, so it is your choice how you want to speed up time

Step 2 – how to create time lapse photography is post production

for that you can use Adobe lightroom to import all teh images in a sequence, and export a slideshow using a specific template in order to use a specific frame rate. For example 24 frames per second will give you the normal cinema view but you can use other frame rates.

The one thing you need is the time lapse template for Adobe Lighroom which you can find be following this link.

For more in depth explanation how, just watch the video to the end and let us know if any questions
