Walk on the beach, royal terns, back in time

photo critique

Hello,

I’ve written a bit of my photography history, however, I know your time is valuable.  Please feel free to skip directly to my submissions below. ]
Thank you for offering the photo critiquing service.  I hope my submissions are not a waste of your time.  I really enjoy the creative expression of photography.  As an engineer, it’s a nice diversion from charts, graphs, and schematics.
I have enjoyed photography for many years but I have never been more than an decent amateur.  I had an SLR until digitals came out.  Then moved to simple Sony Cybershot (2Mp) for convenience when kids were small and film and developing was costly.
In 2007 I moved up to a Sony Cybershot H5 (7Mp) which gave me more control and reignited my interest in taking better pictures.  This camera developed a major battery/energy issue and it stopped working after a couple years.  Discouraged, I floundered about with my family’s point-and-shoot until recently when the photography bug burst out again.
I recently bought a mid-level Nikon D5300.  I got a package that came with the 18-55 mm and 55-300 mm lenses.  They are fine.  They are good enough for my capability, however I quickly realized I didn’t want to change lenses so much (you’re probably rolling your eyes at this comment).  I know professionals have specific lenses for every task, but I’m kinda lazy that way.  Anyway, I now have a Sigma 18-250 mm and I think I’m going to like it VERY much.
I found your academy on YouTube as I try to refresh my memory and learn about photography all over again.  I like the concept of your TRS Scale and plan on critiquing all of my pictures with this idea.
I am submitting 3 pictures that I took with my Cybershot H5 back in 2007.  I’m hoping that with new knowledge and my new camera I will be able to do much better.  I have attempted to rate them myself (as was requested in the YouTube video).  I know I’m more pleased with my own photos than you will be.  I appreciate your honest opinion and will try to understand and incorporate any tips you may have for me.  Thank you for your time.  Here are my submissions:
Walk to the Beach
Photo 1:  “Walk to the Beach”
Key West, Florida – Smather’s Beach
Content: 7 – I think it is visually pleasing and many people may be stirred or feel longing to spend time at a nice tropical beach.
I do not find the image that interesting. I have seen this a million times before. The subject is not that exciting. My TRS is 4

Composition: 6 – I seems out of balance to the right, leading the eye out of the picture, but I like it anyway.  The shadow of the other railing makes it a little better.
I believe you underrate yourself here. You have got the eye and i see rhythm, perspective and the diagonal lines. If you would have the horizon to follow the rule of thirds, this would have been better. MY TRS is 7

Quality: 7 – I used polarizer to get the richer colors that better matched reality.
I do not see anything spectacular. anyone can achieve this quality with any camera. My TRS is 5
Royal Terns
Photo 2: “Royal Terns”
Key West, Florida – Southernmost Point

Content: 6 – I like birds and nature photography.  Other people may not.  I heard Mr. Tudor isn’t keen on seagulls.  Perhaps Royal Terns are a bit more interesting.
Been there, done that, seaguls. nothing special to me.TRS 3 out of 10

Composition: 6 – I really like the 3 distances of the birds and their position relative to one another.  I’m not sure if I should have tried to include the horizon in the photo.
I see what you are saying but the story is not big enough. No need for horizon but the subject should have been bigger a little bit. my TRS is 5

Quality: 6 – The photo may have been better with a larger aperture and focused more on the center bird.
same comment as above. nothing special. 5 out of 10
Back in Time
Photo 3: “Back in Time”
Key West, FL – Fort Zachary Taylor State Park
Content: 6 – This might not be other peoples’ cup of tea, but when I look at it, knowing what Key West is like today, this photo makes me feel what it might have been like 120 years ago in the days of the shipwreckers.
confusing..is this about the boat, or the trees. 4 out of 10

Composition: 6 – Had I had my new camera on 3 fps continuous, I might have captured the sailboat just half a boat length farther in the frame.  I think that is the biggest flaw in this photograph.
I see the horizon and the boat following the rule of thirds, but the trees are destroying the image as they are the subject in my opinion and they do not have any rule. TRS 4 out of 10

Quality: 8 – I really like the contrast without loss of detail.
I am not that impressed. quality is average . TRS 5 out of 10
Thanks again for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Terry Monson
Key West, FL

thank you for your submission. I salute the fact you put a lot of thoughts into your  photography and that is great. I see good parts of your photos, but in order to make them great you need some improvement in the quality. Ask yourself all the time, can anyone else take this photo? why is this more special than others? why is this my photo? how does this reflect my vision and mine only?
I hope it helps
thank you
Christian
