Wedding photos critique

photos by Phil Sherrat

he preparation shot of the brides make up I use a macro lens Minolta 28mm 80mm 0.38/1.3ft AP mode at 6 fst  I my self rate this about 5
the shoes shot I use the same lens with a off camera flash in Ap mode about 12fst
I rate this about 5
the bride and groom shot I use a 70mm-200mm lens with off camera flash to just pop a bit of light onto the bride – groom to compensate for the light because it was a  quite over cast that day through the trees I rate this about a 6

Phil

thank you for your submission. I understand you are keen to get your photos critiqued and you are a wedding photographer. I have checked your website and I have seen only one wedding, so i can see you need a larger portfolio.

I am a wedding photographer myself and that will be a small issue as I might be a bit too subjective in my assessment. I hope you will take my criticism only in a constructive way, and take whatever you believe brings you any value

Let’s have a look…

Bridal couple in the park

Content 5 out of 10

A good subject, nothing special standard couple in the park. As the subject, I cannot say good or bad. This is a normal shoot that all wedding photographers can and have to take.

Composition 7 out of 10

I like the balance of the bride following the ruls of thirds and how the stairs are disappearing on the right hand side. I good angle to shoot from.

Image quality 3 out of 10

This is a below average image quality that can be taken with a point and shoot camera in automatic mode. I cannot see a wow factor and that takes this image down.Where is the professional level? This could have been a good picture. What camera and lens did you use?

Final TRS mark 5 out of 10

Overall an average photo I have seen worse, I have seen better. This could have been much better using a better equipment

 Bridal shoes

SONY DSC

Content 4 out of 10

I see the intention here but the way the shoes are filled randomly with pearls, and I can spot some earrings lost in the dirty texture of the floor is not the greatest choice. You could have shot from the floor level and that would have helped more. The floor looks dirty, not rustic as I think that would have been the intention !?

Composition 3 out of 10

There is no composition here. There is no dialogue, just random without much effort. Did you see the composition tutorial?

Image quality 3 out of 10

There is no light consideration, white balance is not though of, photo was taken as it was comfortable for you.

Bride Make up

Content 2 out of 10

The angle you selected is not helping the bride, on the contrary, it highlights the imperfections. Make up is a great moment for the wedding day and it needs to show outstanding.

Composition 2 out of 10

There is no composition here either.

Image quality 2 out of 10

There is no light consideration, random shot.

I do not want to be harsh with anyone, and I appreciate anyone wishing to learn regardless of their skills. Please take your photos and compare them with other photographers and answer this question…what are differences?

I believe you have got the interest and the drive, I can see that and I would recommend more practice obviously and try to learn few poses and put them into practice.

May I ask what do you shoot with?

What camera mode did you use?
